COME AND SING WEST
GALLERY MUSIC
with
SACRED HARMONY
We aren’t the usual type of choir. We don’t have
weekly rehearsals, hold auditions, wear dinner jackets or evening gowns or
perform long pieces by famous composers.
We are based in North-East Cheshire, drawing members
from the neighbouring counties too and sing West Gallery Music – forgotten
church music from the 18th and early 19th centuries,
written by provincial English and American composers. Our musical director,
Sally Drage, researches and edits music that has largely been ignored or even
lost altogether for over two hundred years. But this music isn’t stuffy. Far
from it! It’s refreshingly
unpredictable, and the Victorians threw it out for being too exuberant and
frivolous or even irreligious!
So we invite you to come and sing forgotten 18th-
and early 19th-century English church music – anthems, psalms, hymns and carols
– and find out why pieces that were once
popular are now perfect for social singing.
All voices are welcome. We sing in parts, so some
ability to note read is an advantage, but all music is taught.
We
meet to practise The
Centre in Poynton, 107, Park Lane, SK12 1RB, on the 3rd Sunday afternoon of
each month, from 2.30 to 4.30, and currently pay £4 each per practice,
including refreshments.
